Sinusitis Unplugged: Clearing the Air on Congestion

Sinusitis is not merely a nuisance for those who suffer from it; it can be a deeply frustrating and debilitating condition that disrupts daily life. In the world of Chinese medicine (CM), it serves as a vivid illustration of how our bodies communicate with us, revealing the underlying imbalances that manifest as discomfort.

In Chinese medicine, the sinuses are seen as interconnected with our overall health—reflecting our emotional state, our lifestyle choices, and the seasonal changes around us.

The Spleen plays a crucial role in transforming food into energy and maintaining fluid balance. When the Spleen is weak, dampness can accumulate, leading to phlegm and congestion in the sinuses. This is not just a physical issue; it often ties back to how we nurture ourselves—what we consume, how we manage stress, and whether we allow ourselves the space to breathe.

The concept of Wind in CM is particularly pertinent to sinusitis. When we’re exposed to external Wind—be it cold, heat, or humidity—our immune system can falter, leaving us vulnerable to invasions that lead to inflammation.

Emotions also play a significant role. Grief and sadness can affect the Lungs, which govern our ability to take in Qi and let go of what no longer serves us. Blocked and stuck emotions can manifest physically, creating tension that can lead to sinus pressure. Addressing this requires more than just physical treatment; it demands an honest reflection on what we’re holding onto, both in our bodies and our hearts.

In treating sinusitis, CM offers a whole body and mind approach. Acupuncture can help alleviate symptoms by reducing the phlegm and damp accumulation and supporting the function of the Spleen while herbal formulas can invigorate the system and additionally help to expel phlegm and blockages. Other modifications—like reducing damp and phlegm producing foods like : dairy, gluten, bananas, soy milk, processed sugar, incorporating warm foods, and ensuring adequate hydration—can also help us breathe easy and support us in taking control of our health.
